Understanding Zoning for Backyard Homes in Guelph, ON

Do you own a home in Guelph and are thinking of maximizing your backyard’s potential? Check out this breakdown to see whether your yard could fit an ADU.

As the map shows, there are a number of Critical Dimensions required to gain a building permit. Your backyard dwelling must be at least 10’ from your side and rear property line if you would like windows along those walls. Should you choose to maximize your yard and ADU (and go without windows on these walls), you can build 5’ from the rear and side property line. If you reside on a corner lot, your side setback is 4.5m, or 14’9”.

The Backyard Home Footprint can be 30% of the total area of the backyard (depth x width of your property).

The Gross Floor Area cannot exceed 80m² (861 sq. ft.) or 45% of your existing home (this includes all floors).

The Height of the Backyard Home cannot exceed 5m or 16’4”.
